To me, making art is evolution. I learn something from each attempt so I am re-inspired to experiment further. Art puts joy into problem solving, and spirit into motivation. It’s a nice cycle of struggle and resolution, an attempt to fit the wide world onto a flat rectangle. And Kaua’i is the self contained little world that I am privileged to document.
There is a split in my nature between the simple appreciation of beauty and having to analyze what makes a scene work aesthetically. So while the spiritual component of the view lifts my mind, my hands take over to deconstruct and rebuild it, to better understand the elements that make the scene worth noticing and celebrating. I love the layering of atmosphere, distance, and meaning that is possible to add to a work. And each viewer adds their own input, thus the work is always evolving. The static becomes fluid–the pulse of life. =
